Ditching Perfection for Presence in Your Quiet Time

Can you picture this?

It’s 6 AM and you’re sitting down to a quiet house with a beautifully fresh, hot cup of coffee. You take in a deep breath and look at the sun rays peeking through your cracked blinds.

You set down your cup, reach for your Bible, open up to the Psalms when you suddenly hear your baby start to cry, your toddler telling you they’ve peed the bed, or a teenager flying down the stairs.

Suddenly, your quiet time with God isn’t quite so quiet.

So often, we believe our quiet time with God should be a serene, spiritually profound experience. While that can certainly happen, it's not the reality for everyone.

Let's peel back the layers of perfectionism and discover a more authentic and enjoyable spiritual practice.

The Pressure to Perform

We can easily fall into the trap of treating our quiet time like a spiritual performance. We strive for deep insights, heartfelt prayers, and a profound connection with God every single day. But this pressure can lead to frustration, guilt, and even avoidance when we don't meet our self-imposed expectations.

Finding Grace in the Imperfect

Instead of chasing perfection, let's embrace imperfection. God loves us unconditionally, flaws and all. Our quiet time is a space for honest conversation with Him, not a stage for spiritual showmanship.

Practical Tips for a More Authentic Quiet Time

  • Start small: Begin with just a few minutes of focused attention on God's presence.

  • Let go of distractions: Create a peaceful environment and minimize interruptions.

  • Experiment with different approaches: Try journaling, praying out loud on a walk, or listening to worship music.

  • Be gentle with yourself: If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to focus.

  • Celebrate small victories: Acknowledge your efforts and progress, no matter how small.

Remember, the goal is to cultivate a deeper relationship with God, not to earn spiritual merit badges. By embracing imperfection, we create a more authentic and enjoyable spiritual practice.
