Understanding Your Emotions from a Biblical Viewpoint
We all experience them – joy, sadness, anger, fear. Emotions are a powerful force, shaping our thoughts, actions, and interactions with the world. But how do we, as Christians, navigate this emotional rollercoaster? The Bible offers a wealth of wisdom on understanding and managing our feelings.
Emotions: God-Given Gifts, Not Enemies
The Bible doesn't shy away from emotions. From David's lamentations in the Psalms to Jesus' moments of anger and grief, scripture acknowledges the full spectrum of human feeling. In fact, emotions are a gift from God, wired into us to help us connect with others, respond to danger, and appreciate the beauty of life (Psalm 139:14).
Plus, the Bible is full of stories about people who experienced different types of emotions. It isn’t a new thing …
Bible Characters Who Experienced Emotions
David's Deep Sadness: After his sin with Bathsheba, David pours out his heart in grief and repentance. Psalm 51 is a raw expression of his sorrow: "Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion, blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin" (Psalm 51:1-2).
Elijah's Burnout: The prophet Elijah feels overwhelmed and discouraged. 1 Kings 19:4 tells us, "He came to a broom bush, sat down beneath it and prayed for death for himself. 'I have had enough, LORD,' he said. 'Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors'" (1 Kings 19:4).
Peter's Fear and Regret: Following Jesus' arrest, Peter denies knowing him three times. Mark 14:72 (AMP) records his reaction: "he began weeping [in anguish]."
Sarah's Overwhelming Joy: Barren for most of her life, Sarah receives the miraculous news that she will bear a son in her old age. Genesis 21:6 (NASB) describes her reaction: "Sarah said, ‘God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.’"
Plus, God Himself experiences emotions which makes sense since we are made in His image!
Bible Verses Showing God's Emotions
God's Love: John 3:16 (NIV) tells us, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." This verse is a powerful expression of God's love for humanity.
God's Anger: While God is loving, the Bible also speaks of His righteous anger towards sin. Nahum 1:2 (NIV) says, "The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath; the LORD takes vengeance on his foes and vents his wrath against his enemies."
God's Jealousy: Deuteronomy 4:24 (NIV) declares, "For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God." This verse highlights God's desire for our complete devotion.
The Importance of Balance
However, the Bible also warns against the dangers of unregulated emotions. Proverbs 29:11 (CSB) tells us, "A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise person holds it in check." Uncontrolled emotions can lead to poor decisions, damaged relationships, and even sin.
The key is finding balance. We can acknowledge our emotions without letting them control us. Think about acknowledging that they are riding along in the backseat- not the driver’s seat.
So, how do we achieve this balance?
Identify Your Emotions: The first step is recognizing your feelings. Take a moment to name what you're experiencing. Maybe you’re not sure exactly what to name it. A feelings wheel can be a great resource in this situation (no, you’re not too old to use a feelings wheel!)
Seek the Root Cause: Don't just react to the surface emotion. Ask yourself, "What's triggering this feeling?" Was it something you saw? Something you’re worried about? Once you know what’s bothering you, you can figure out where to go from there.
Turn to God: Prayer is a powerful tool for processing emotions. Share your feelings with God and seek His guidance (Philippians 4:6-7).
Renew Your Mind: The Bible encourages us to transform our minds by studying scripture (Romans 12:2). God's word offers a healthy perspective on life's challenges.
Emotions and the Fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV) describes the "fruit of the Spirit" – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These qualities give us a guide for our emotional responses.
By cultivating these fruits, we can experience a deeper sense of peace and navigate our emotions in a way that honors God.
Remember, you're not alone! God understands your struggles and offers strength and guidance. With His help, you can learn to manage your emotions and live a life that reflects His love.
